Our 2007 Driving Tour Of Alaska - Denali, Day 15

May 22, Day 15. Up around 6:00 AM and out to the park. We boarded our bus at 8:00. An interesting side note. Our driver was Nancy Russell. After returning home, we were watching a program dealing with Denali National Park on the Travel Channel and, lo and behold, there was a sequence on the tour busses and the bus chosen was driven by . . . yep, Nancy Russell. It was interesting to see our driver on TV 5,000 miles away.

The trip out to Toklat was very similar to yesterday except we saw more wildlife close to the road. The bears were at Teklanika again but, again, I didn't have the equipment to get decent photos of them. The first thing close enough to photograph was a Moose that was causally strolling along in a river. We stopped on the bridge over the river and the Moose walked under the bridge, emerging on the other side. It appeared to be a pregnant female and we figured she was looking for a place to drop her calf. She paid virtually no attention to the bus load of people on the bridge.

A bit farther along the road, we ran across a Dall Sheep ewe with a lamb. They were on a knoll just off the roadway. While we were stopped, they started moving around the knoll to the backside. They were still there when we came back on the return trip so they apparently weren't running away from us.

On up the road, we stopped at the visitor rest area (I believe it was Igloo River) and climbed the peak again. The scenery had not changed much since yesterday. In general, the snow covered mountains made for really spectacular scenery throughout the state, but especially in the park.

At the end of the route, at Toklat River, there were three bears on a mountain side across the river. They were foraging and moved up the mountain and over a ridge. We saw them again on the return as we rounded the mountain upon leaving Toklat. We stopped and waited because they appeared to be headed down the mountain and would have crossed the road just ahead of us. Unfortunately they decided to turn around and move back up the mountain. It was fun watching them even if they were too far away for my equipment. On down the road on the return trip, we ran across a couple of Caribou close to the roadway. These were close enough to get a few shots of them

We saw another Golden Eagle flying along the road on a flat and several Northern Harriers. Magpies, Snowshoe Hares, Artic Ground Squirrels, Willow Ptarmigans were all seen frequently along the route out to Toklat and on the return. By now though, these animals had become common sights and didn't elicit much attention.

We got back to the Wilderness Access Center about 5:00 PM. We ate at Rose's Cafe again and went back to the hotel. Our visit at Denali had been a lot of fun and very productive photographically. Tomorrow, we go to Fairbanks, the Artic Circle and North Pole.
