Notes

12. Cornelius Miller

Info on Cornelius and Elizabeth Barr Miller came from the ScottishGeneral Records Office and was found at the LDS family history center.

Another Source for Miller info is the hand written sheet from Mrs.H.E.Montague, 619 Rock St., Little Rock ARK in 1939

From a column in the Arkansas Gazette, Little Rock AR., probablypublished before 1939 because it is in an envelope with a 1939 postmarkfrom Mrs .H.E. Montague, 619 Rock St., Little Rock ARK. The column istitled "Glimses of Yesterday" and carry a byline for Lucy Marion Reaves.

The first article is about James Arthur Miller and Mattie Moores Miller.James Miller was born in Columbus Ms. in 1833 to James Miller and MarionSpiers Miller. James Miller Sr. was from Barrowstoness Scotland and, accompanied by three brothers, came to America and settled in Columbus MSin 1848. Richard was a marble worker and his work is in monuments atColumbus and in many old southern homes (e.g., home of Col George Youngat Waverly). John and Cornelius Miller were farmers and millers on theTombigbee River while James was a furniture dealer in partnership withhis brother - in - law Capt. Robert Spiers. A Sister of the fourbrothers married Wm. Barr and they lived in St. Louis (note, these arethe Barrs of the Barr Dept. Store in St.L)

A second article deals with Robert Spiers and Marion Speirs Miller(Father and Daughter). The article indicates that The Speirs came toAmerica in 1824 with other Scottish families (Witherspoons, Grahams,Taits, Millers and Barrs) and this colony settled in Caledonia,Switzerland Co. Indiana.

NOTE: Look for "The Book of Marion", a Miller family history by Mrs.H.E. Montague.

13. Elizabeth Elliot

Stone in Miller Plot, Friendship cemetary, Columbus MS:
Elizabeth Elliot Miller, Wife of Cornelius - B. 1783 or 1793 (difficultto read but probably 1883 since she would have only been 14 when firstchild was born in 1807 if born '93) in Scotland - D. Oct 1862,(probably in Columbus Ms.)

14. Mark Barr

Mark Barr and Anne Curr were determined to be the parents of ElizabethBarr through the Estate proceedings for Anne Curr Barr in which Elizabethwas identified as one of the "living children" of Anne Curr Barr, alongwith Mary Anne Barr and William B. Barr. Additionally, the will ofJessie Read Wright Barr, wife of William B. Barr, willed "hergrandfather's skeleton clock" which is in Marion Hope's possession and isinscribed on the face "M. Barr, Lanark"

Note that Elizabeth Barr in not shown in the church records of Scotland(General Records Office of Scotland). That may be because she was bornlate and not christened in Scotland or was not born until after Mark andAnne came to the USA.

Mark Barr is found in the 1840 census for New York City but is not in the1850 census, Ann Curr Barr being shown without husband.
