SW US Trip with Marion C. and Sue Hope

Tyler Texas, Stop 3

Saturday, May 16

We left New Orleans fairly early to go to Tyler Texas to visit briefly with a newly found cousin, Hugh Mills. We discovered Hugh when we were in The Shenandoah National Park and it began to rain. We dropped down to Front Royal to do some genealogy research to take advantage of the rain days. While searching in the Laura Virginia Hale Archives, the archivist found a box of materials comprising the work of a local, professional genealogist that had been donated to the archives on her death. Among the papers was a folder containing results and correspondence concerning a search she had done several years ago for one Hugh Mills. Imagine our surprise when we saw that the search was on our great, great grandfather, James Thomas Hope. Hugh, it turns out, is a descendent of Julia Hope Little, our great, great aunt. We made contact and Hugh and I have exchanged a lot of information since. Notably, Hugh was the source of a number of photographs of the family, among them one of Phoebe White Hope, our great, great grandmother. We met Hugh and his wife, Glenda, for dinner and a lot of talk and socializing at a local restaurant.
