England on the Sharp's narrow boat Hawkeye.

Day 12, May 26 To Lymm.

Today, we cruise from Daresbury just up the canal to Lymm. The canal route in the Google Earth image above is shown by the small arrows.

One of the interesting things about canal boating is how narrow boaters make their moorings like "home". Even those who are not full timers decorate their moorings and make them comfortable and homey.

One of the fascinating things we frequently encountered along the Canal is the behavior of the wading/fishing birds.

As illustrated above, as we approach, they will fly along the canal to a position maybe a few hundred feet further along. They will sit there until we get close, then fly a little further, stop and wait again. We have seen them do this six or eight times for close to a mile. Eventually, they either decide we aren't going to scare up any fish for them, or that they can't escape our chase that way, so they fly away.

More Rhododendrons along the canal.

Another typically English home with wisteria growing on the walls.

Another of the beautiful yellow flowering trees.

These ducklings were swimming in the reflection of the red upper section of a moored narrow boat. Note the two blond ones. Apparently some domestic, white duck genes entered the gene pool of this brood.

The requisite Swan.

And here come the ducklings looking for a handout. Boy! They sure do learn young!

There were many of these yellow Irises along the canals. They apparently grow wild.

And, of course, more ducks.

Here's another example of the creativity narrow boater's employ in naming and displaying names of their canal boats.

More Rhododendrons - One of the rare decent shots taken while moving.

We got to Lymm near noon and moored at the city mooring area. We walked into the city, did some grocery shopping, verified that the Indian restaurant would be open that night - it was a Bank Holiday - and had lunch at The Spread Eagle. Then back to Hawkeye and rested until time for dinner - which was really excellent!
