Days 17-19, May 31-June 2 In Manchester

Saturday, Day 17, was bright and pleasant. We had breakfast and then moved Hawkeye to another mooring over on the Grocery Wharf. The site we were moored in actually belonged to one of the tour boats which was out on tour last night. The relative locations of the two moorings are shown on the Google Earth image above.


After moving, we walked to the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) and spent the day touring it. We had lunch in the museum sandwich shop. There were a lot of very interesting exhibits in MOSI. We snooped around the locomotive exhibit, the steam engine exhibit, the cotton weaving exhibit and an entire building dedicated to antique airplanes. I managed to lose all the photos I took on the last couple of days in Manchester - including those at the MOSI - so no more pictures in the travelogue. The MOSI was presenting a Body Works Exhibit, one of those much publicized and maligned plasticized human body dissection exhibits, but we unsure whether we wanted to see it or not. Anyway, after a full day at the MOSI, we came back to Hawkeye, then went up to Dukes Lock 92 Pub for an early evening meal. Duke's has a paté and cheese bar and we all tried different patés and cheeses and really enjoyed the meal. We left, determined to come back later for more of their great food, went back to Hawkeye and settled in for the night.


Woke up on Sunday, Day 18, to find it raining. It effectively rained all day so we didn't get out much at all. We had breakfast, lunch and dinner on board and just enjoyed relaxing and socializing. Dot and I were flying out on Tuesday, so we spent some time packing and getting things ready to travel.


Monday, Day 19 dawned clear and pleasant. We had decided to go to the Body Works exhibit if the weather allowed so we headed for the MOSI and bought tickets. The exhibit was fascinating. Virtually every organ in the body was displayed. One of the more impressive items was a pair of lungs, one from a smoker and one from a non-smoker. The difference was scary. One of the more interesting aspects of the exhibit was the reaction of the people seeing it. The comments ranged from "I'll never smoke again" through "fascinating", "educational" to "sick" and "disgusting". After spending several hours taking in the exhibit, we headed back to Hawkeye and another paté and cheese meal. Since we were flying out early (or so we thought - our flight was delayed)tomorrow, we had decided to go to the airport and stay at Bewley's hotel right across the street from one of the terminals there. We gathered our luggage and called a taxi. Got to the Manchester airport and flew out the next morning - four hours late but it didn't matter. Made it back home to Gainesville by about 11:00 PM that evening. Had a wonderful time and a great visit with Frank and Chris aboard Hawkeye.
